We have a new Attending starting this week, Dr Shaw. This is Dr Shaw's second rotation with Johnny, so it was nice that she was familiar with him from day one. All of the doctors do a great job of updating each other, so they all know about Johnny's medical condition, but Dr Shaw already knows about how to read Johnny to tell if he's hurting or mad or whatever.
Today Dr Shaw came with some good news. The spinal tap that Johnny had on Monday came back clear! No blasts, which means that more than likely the cells found in the earlier LPs were contamination with blood from outside his spinal cord. Johnny will still need two more LPs, but at least we know we aren't fighting cancer in his spinal fluid. Johnny's WBC is down to .05, so if things continue on this track Johnny should be headed to a bone marrow transplant sometime late September or early October.
There are still a couple of things that could delay, or even prevent, getting to transplant. The first of course would be the AML flaring again. This would put us back at square one, and at this time I'm not sure what our options would be. The second, and much more likely, would be Johnny getting a secondary infection that would need to be fought prior to going to transplant. An infection could kill Johnny, or delay treatment long enough for the cancer to come back. We can't do much about the possibility of the AML returning, but we do need to take every precaution against the possibility of secondary infection. Now that Johnny's immune system has been completely compromised, and school has started back up, Julie and I would like to ask that Johnny is only visited by adults who are pretty sure they're not sick. I hope this doesn't come across as rude. We just want to make sure that we take every precaution possible to ensure that Johnny has the best chance we can give him to get through this.
Johnny's hands and feet actually look worse today, and seem to be super tender. Because Johnny won't push the button on his morphine drip Dr Shaw decided he needed to be on a continuous drip. Today she increased the amount he is getting because even though he won't say anything he is obviously in a lot of pain. The nurses and I are keeping the palms of his hands and soles of his feet moisturized with lotion, but we have to push his button several times, and give him a dose of Adavan just to be able to touch him. Not because he will complain, but because it hurts us to think that we are causing him any pain. It's just nuts to think how toxic the Clofarabine must be to do this to him. Now I understand why the nurses who gave it to him were wearing haz-mat suits.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring him a little more relief.

Awesome news!!! Clear spinal tap fluid report is music to my ears!!! YOU DA MAN JOHNNY!!! I couldn't agree more about not letting children in. The only people that should be around Johnny now are you and Julie and the docotrs ( I'm Fed Exing Heafy's old bubble suit to you..(that one was for Jim) LOL. Seriously, you guys are doing the right thing...no feelings hurt here. Heath will text ya later today.
Sending our love,

Woo hoo ... clear spinal tap! That's the best news ever! Everyone wants what is BEST FOR JOHNNY'S RECOVERY, so if you need one of us to come up and play bouncer to the 9th floor, let us know!
XOXO

Wonderful news about no blasts in the LP. Prayers and thoughts with you. Keep up the good fight.
Sharon and Anthony Boening
My little Super Hero Johnny. Keep fighting the fight. All of our love and prayers are with you guys.
I dont believe that anyone on this earth would think you were being rude. There are alot of germs out there and they need to be kept anyway from Johnny.
Beverly
You're no offending anyone by saying no visitors guys! You have to protect Johnny at all costs now.
Minus Mike, Julie, and the docs we should all be watching from the blog, not from the room. We all carry germs and now is not the time to play with the serious risk that is infection with the J-Man.
Hang in there Romano Family.
Well, if you could have written the best case scenario out before the clofarabine (sp?) started, I'm guessing this would pretty much be it! Other than the pain, of course. There's nothing that hurts the heart more than thinking you're hurting your baby, I'm sure.
Amelia & I were at TCH yesterday and I thought, thought, thought about a visit. I've been over pneumonia for over a week now but Amelia has a cough and I chickened out. I'm kind of releived to hear it's just not a good idea right now. 'Rude' has nothing to do with it!!
We're always thinking of you guys. Johnny sure is the toughest kid on the planet. 10 years from now, when we're all looking back on this in retrospect, eating crawdaddies in-between surf seshes, I'd like to ask him about his inner strength and how he's been so stoic. Remarkable.
Love & Hugs, Pam
WooHoo, WooHoo, WooHoo........I cannot say it enough!!! I have been checking the blog several times a day since Monday just waiting to hear those wonderful words....no blasts in the spinal fluid! Thinking about all of you everyday and praying for transplant day to get here soon, soon, soon!!!
Love,
Craig and Kelly
Mike, you are not being rude, you are doing what you have to do for Johnny, and I can't imagine that there isn't one person out there who doesn't understand your request. Keep fighting.
Kathleen
That indeed is great news about the blasts! I know it has got to be hard to celebrate that news when you have to turn around and look at the damage the drugs caused to his hands and feet! There is a higher power keeping you two sane and stable for Johnny, I believe it! We'll gather a "star team" to cordon off TCH from anyone not wearing scrubs if you need us to...we'll even bring coffee! Keep fighting Johnny, we're watching and waiting for your next super hero move!

"Super" news - from the 9th floor. keep it rolling j-grom. Transplant - just a few weeks away.
We love you and send hugs (e-hugs are germ free!! :-D
Rhonda, Wes Russhole (hmmm, might be germy) and The Big Sista
First of all, I don't mind being "candid" because I know we all love Johnny and want him to get through this. So, everyone other than Julie, Mike and medical staff needs to send their wishes this way or any other means outside of the hospital! Even if we think we are healthy, we all carry germs that could be very harmful to Johnny, especially if we are around kids ;)
We hate to imagine Johnny in so much pain, but so glad the Clofarabine is doing what it is supposed to do.
Johnny, you'll paddle through this just like I watched you paddle past the sandbar over and over again in Corpus, because this is what you do...you wouldn't think of any other way. When you get past this sandbar, it will all be a blur and you can get back to having fun. Jacob & Kyle are waiting to start back up our spaghetti dinners with y'all running around skating and playing ping-pong. They really miss you and pray together fo you every night. Surf season if soon approaching and we are looking forward to seeing you, Joey, Kyle and Jacob paddle out together again!!! What a picture :)
Love you.
Kim,David,Danielle,Kyle & Jacob
This is such great news about the blasts and I am with others - everybody except Mike and Julie should stay away and let Johnny have every opportunity to avoid infection of any kind. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Johnny and the whole Romano family and you are one of a kind in your strength, determination and attitude!! Someone should make a documentary about you and your family to inspire all others!!
Keep fighting to stay healthy for the transplant and God bless you for being so stoic about all the pain you have endured and all you have been through.
Susie Deason
We are so happy to hear positive news.... we continue to pray and send good thoughts to you all.
Please... do not think twice about informing us of the risks and precautions of infections. I am sure that no one takes it personally, and understands the importance. I have always talked to Brian, and the other kids (& moms) in the neighborhood regarding that....what might be a minor thing for us, could be a major thing for Johnny. We will work with you guys in anyway we can.
We are here... if you need anything. And with you all in our hearts.
Love ~ the Buckalews
There are a bunch of "adults" in my office that are sick right now. A little early for the sinus infection and flu bugs to hit, but I thought I'd give y'all the heads-up. I also thought I'd pass an atta boy on to Johnny, since he's taking the shaolin approach...keeping his energy centered and focused!
Hello Guys,
We are so glad for Jhonny, that's reallly great news. You always are in our prayers.Keep the faith.
God bless you!
Take care and have some rest.

May I get a hallelujah from the Johnny Romano fan club? The news of no blast is the best news ever!
I think the physicians should even be screened before entering Johnny's room! Allergies, smalergies, you have any type of post nasal drip, even what you think is just a frog in your throat, STAY AWAY!
This kid is on the road to recovery and no set backs are needed!
Hugs to the Romano Family,
Christina
